About: Environmental Flows (e-flows)
Environmental flows are the acceptable flow regimes that are required to maintain a river in the desired environmental state or predetermined state.
That is, it is the regime of flow in a river that mimics the natural pattern of the river's flows.
It refers to the quality, quantity and timing of water flows required to maintain the components, functions, processes and resilience of aquatic ecosystems that provide goods and services to people.
Importance – Few benefits of environmental flows are:
It helps maintain the essential processes required to support healthy river ecosystems.
It is important for the health of a river to keep it clean through its natural ecological functions and processes.
It helps keep it organically alive to support aquatic life.
It helps produce more benefits from rivers than from river management focusing on water supply, energy, recreation, or flood control.
