About Thakurani Jatra festival

The famous Berhampur Thakurani Jatra is one of the biggest festivals of southern Odisha.
The month-long festival is celebrated biennially.
According to historians, the first Thakurani Jatra was celebrated in the city in 1779.
Goddess Budhi Thakurani is the traditional deity of silk handloom weavers or the Dera community of Berhampur in Odisha.

During the festival, Goddess Budhi Thakurani is taken to her temporary abode at Desibehera (barber) street, where she stays till the festival ends. Shubha Khunti or holy pole from the temple is also put in front of this temporary abode.
As homage to the Goddess, people of all ages, including children and the elderly, transform themselves into various characters from Indian mythology through body painting.
